BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Dijana Ihas serves as an Associate Professor of Music Education at Pacific University in Oregon where she teaches courses in music education and conducts the university orchestra. She is a regular presenter on string pedagogy and string education topics at state, regional, and national conferences. Dr. Ihas’ research interests include qualitative and mixed-methods explorations of mentoring and undergraduate research, as well as historical explorations of string pedagogy.
Her publications appeared in the American String Teacher (AST) journal, Journal of String Research, and Council for Undergraduate Research (CUR) Quarterly, among others.
Dr. Ihas’ educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in music performance – Viola (University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina), a Master of Fine Arts in Performance – Viola (University of California Irvine), a Master of Music in Music Education (University of Arizona), a PhD in Music Education (University of Oregon), and the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Orchestral Conducting (Messiah College, Pennsylvania).

The purpose of this demonstration lecture is to provide participants with a comprehensive insight into the teaching principles of eight of the most commonly used string pedagogy approaches applicable for teaching string beginner and intermediate students: Applebaum, Bornoff, Havas, Kievman, Rolland, Sassmannshaus, Suzuki, and Zweig. The presentation will include a demonstration of steps for teaching foundations (posture, instrument and bow hold) along with steps/strategies for teaching basic left-and right-hand techniques. As we are progressing through the 21st century and we find ourselves teaching in a variety of learning environments, some formal and some informal, it has become prudent for string teachers to know more than just one or two string pedagogy approaches. Participants will receive a detailed handout to assist them in further application of what they learned in this session.
